To the child's mind, things need to be put in simple terms.
Children understand the easy explanation, even though it's far-fetched.

Humanity, as a child, needed the simple terms. What is weather? What is the sun? What is life? Death? Why are we here? What is right or wrong? How should I act?

I consider myself an agnostic. Why? Let me explain briefly:

I am amazed at the universe. Every new scientific discovery brings humanity a little closer to understanding the universe and reality itself. When we finally understand it all, we may indeed discover that there is a being (doubtful), a race (more likely), or a force (kinda shaky, but a highly developed race may appear to us more as a force of nature) that is responsible for everything we know to be real.

Self-Defeating.

Atheists could be right, there may be no god at all. However, to not recognize the social benefits that religion has wrought throughout history is willing ignorance.

Yes, religion has also brought on a great deal of undue pain and suffering, and it's easy to say we'd be better off without it - but again, that is shortsighted and ignorant. Until/unless humanity itself wakes up to morality as a principle as opposed to a commandment, then religion is the one unifying factor that…

Surprisingly enough, I have found someone who shares my basic thoughts in religion. Sadly, he's firmly entrenched amongst the liberal asshats who refuse to understand that simply understanding that religious fundamentalists are basically all the same type of idiots does not end the argument. Sometimes the gloves have to come off and the idiots need to be slapped around.

Christianity

	* Started as the religion of an oppressed people (Jews) in Egypt
	* Gave the people the will to overthrow their oppressors and escape to freedom
	* Became a powerful religion driven to conquer others (crusades, Mayans, others)
	* Moved to more insidious methods of expansion, absorbing other religions (Voodoo)
	* Now considered “mainstream” despite a dubious history

Great concept, impossible to implement. You cannot have true/complete freedom of religion and still maintain a single set of social rules.

The United States was founded on Christian principles, with laws and social conscience based on the “Ten Commandments” of Moses. Any religion that does not hold the same basic principles cannot be adhered to under these laws.

If there is an intelligence that set our universe in motion, it is indifferent at best. To imagine that one being could be personally interested in every aspect of this magnitude of things is yet another display of the foolhardy Ego of mankind.

Religious fanatics justify ID by blindly stating that “God” is all-powerful. This is an excuse to explain something that cannot be explained.

Remember these lyrics from Sting's “Russians”?

	* In Europe and America, there’s a growing feeling of hysteria

	* In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets

According to Jewish teachings, it is made up of three parts: the Law (also known as the Torah or Pentateuch), comprising the first five books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), which describes the origins of the world, the covenant between the Lord and Israel, the exodus and entry into the promised land, and the various rules governing so…

Welcome, curious visitors!

Simple things, should be obvious, but when handed down by “god”, the guilt/morality concepts kick in to make them more important - note the sexist/racist elements that were never removed, even as the populations and societies outgrew those notions:

What if?

(Prompted by a show on the History Channel about the extent of knowledge man had thousands of years ago, lost, then rediscovered only recently).

What if mankind's natural path is to completely understand the universe, but certain events in human history like war, disaster and, more to the point, religion work as stumbling blocks to slow our progress on that path?

This page needs to be rewritten/formatted/more thoroughly thought out... seems like a good place for me to drop this piece of text for the moment, though!

These ideas came to me today while having a discussion1 on religion in general with a devout, (recent?) convert to Christianity. I struggled to hold them in my head until I could get them into words - too often I have amazingly lucid thoughts that never make it into any sort of permanent form; I need to get better at this.
